Roblyer & Doering (2014) identify five areas of potential problems that may arise from or be associated with internet use, however it is important to note that the areas that will be listed below are not the only potentially problematic issues. These issues include: “accessing sites with inappropriate materials” due to how easily accessible obtaining any information is, potential “safety and privacy issues” for students including; cyberbullying, privacy issues or online predators, “fraud on the internet”, “computer viruses and hacking” which may result in damaged files or software, and “copyright and plagiarism issues” that occur as a result of unlawful obtainment of information (Roblyer & Doering, 2014, pp.235-237).

  1. Hi Melinda,
There are a range of solutions to each of these problems, as identified by Roblyer & Doering (2014). In relation to problem one, accessing sites with inappropriate materials, schools should install either a firewall or filtering software, to block certain sites or words (Roblyer & Doering, 2014). Although, nothing is foolproof or without issues, and this can have negative impacts (Roblyer & Doering, 2014). Content that is important for learning may actually be blocked as a result of the software (Roblyer & Doering, 2014). However, I believe that having some blocks in place is still a valuable solution to the problem, but should be used alongside teaching the students how to navigate the internet safely and appropriately.

  2. Hi Mel,
This is a great blog post. Its is very important to be aware of all this risks that students might face when using technology. I believe that teachers can counteract these ethical issues by teaching students how to correctly and safely use the internet (Roblyer & Doering, 2014). Another great positive about technology is that there is also software available that helps prevent these ethical issues from occurring such as internet security (Roblyer & Doering, 2014).

  3. Hi Mel,
What a detailed blog post. I also agree that ICT can come with lots of problems. One key thing as a teacher is to ensure that students are educated on how to be safe and responsible users of technology and being able to use ICT effectively.
